| We are finally just about on a schedule. Rebekah eats 4-6 ounces about every 3 hours
during the day. At night she'll sleep for 6-8 hours, wake up and eat, and then sleep for
another 2-4 hours. At the end of the week, we started to switch from the orthodontic nipple
to the regular kind. Mommy is able to feed her just fine with the orthodontic nipple, but
if Daddy (who doesn't get much feeding practice) tries, it can take a half hour for
Rebekah to drink 1/2 ounce! Everything goes much faster with the regular nipple, and she doesn't seem to fall asleep in the middle of the feeding either. The challenge with the orthodontic nipple had been keeping her awake long enough to get a good feeding in. I think she just gets tired of sucking before she's had enough to eat, because she usually wakes up 5 minutes later crying from hunger! In order to keep her awake, we have tried tickling her tummy, blowing in her face, talking, and playing music, but the only thing that seemed to work to keep her awake was making loud kissing noises! Joe discovered this when he kissed her ear a little more loudly than he intended to and she startled awake! The only problem with the new nipple is that she will continue to suck on it even if she's full, either because she doesn't realize she's full or because she just likes to suck. This has resulted in some major spit-up incidents, so we're definitely making a slow transition, alternating between the different types of nipples. Now that we're feeding Rebekah formula, I have discovered a new way to tell if she is hungry or just tired. A couple times when I was running water to prepare her formula I realized she was falling asleep. So, when I'm in doubt, I take her into the kitchen or bathroom and run the water, the fan, or the dryer, and if she's tired at all, her eyelids begin to droop. Otherwise, I know she's probably crying because she's hungry. |
